Semarang, May 29, 2024 – The Faculty of Law, Diponegoro University (UNDIP) continued the Lex Proficia 2024 summer course series with the theme “Ocean Justice and Maritime Security”. This session was held online and presented H.E. Laurentius Amrih Jinangkung, S.H., LL.M., as the main speaker, with moderator Fachry Hasani Habib, S.H., M.H. The discussion this time focused on Indonesia’s geographical characteristics and current climate change, as well as Indonesia’s efforts in facing these challenges.

The keynote speaker, H.E. The first speaker, Dr. Mas Achmad Santosa, S.H., LL.M., an environmental and maritime law expert and chairman of the Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative, delivered a presentation entitled “Reconceptualizing Environmental Law for the Anthropocene.” He explained how environmental law must adapt to the Anthropocene era, where human activities have a significant impact on the planet. “We need to reconstruct environmental law to be more responsive to the challenges of the Anthropocene era, including climate change and human-induced environmental degradation,” Dr. Santosa said. Dr. Santosa also emphasized the need for a more integrative and interdisciplinary approach in designing environmental policies and laws.

Andreas Aditya Salim, co-founder of the Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative, discussed the latest developments in international law on ocean protection and climate change at the fourth session of the Lex Proficia 2024 summer course. Semarang, May 27, 2024 – The Faculty of Law of Diponegoro University (UNDIP) kicked off the first session of the Lex Proficia 2024 summer course series with the theme “Foreign Affairs, Human Rights and Climate Justice.” The event was held online and featured two prominent speakers, H.E. Prof. Dr. Eddy Pratomo, S.H., M.A., and H.E. Prof. Dr. Todung Mulya Lubis, S.H., LL.M.

H.E. Prof. Dr. Eddy Pratomo, S.H., M.A., former Indonesian Ambassador to Germany, started the session with a presentation on climate change and its relevance to UNCLOS 1982 in achieving the SDGs. He emphasized that climate change refers to long-term changes in temperature and weather patterns. “Climate change may pose a threat to Indonesia’s status as an “archipelagic state” which is a new legal concept adopted in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 1982,” Prof. Eddy said.

The Lex Proficia 2024 summer course featured speakers H.E. Prof. Dr. Todung Mulya Lubis and Dr. Ciara Malone who discussed human rights, climate justice, and the role of international law in addressing these issues. The participants, comprised of students and academics from various countries, actively engaged in an interactive dialogue during the event. Opening of 6th Lex Proficia 2024 Summer Course Activities

Semarang, May 27, 2024 – The opening of the highly anticipated summer course of the Faculty of Law of the University of Diponegoro, the 6th Lex Proficia 2024, was officially held today. With the theme “Triple Planetary Crisis and Humanitarian Crisis”, the event attracted participants from several other countries. The event focused on pressing environmental and humanitarian challenges. The opening ceremony was held online via zoom. It was attended by more than 120 participants, reflecting the widespread interest and concern for these crucial issues.

The event started with a welcome speech emphasizing the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in addressing the connections between environmental degradation, climate change, and humanitarian crises. This was followed by remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Law from the collaborating universities, the head of Diponegoro University’s international affairs office, and the Dean of Undip’s Faculty of Law. Dr. Tri Laksmi Indreswari spoke about the need for collaborative efforts across sectors and disciplines to overcome unprecedented challenges. The purpose of the summer course mentioned in the remarks is to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to develop sustainable solutions to the global crisis.
