Semarang, May 27, 2024 – The Faculty of Law of Diponegoro University (UNDIP) kicked off the first session of the Lex Proficia 2024 summer course series with the theme “Foreign Affairs, Human Rights and Climate Justice.” The event was held online and featured two prominent speakers, H.E. Prof. Dr. Eddy Pratomo, S.H., M.A., and H.E. Prof. Dr. Todung Mulya Lubis, S.H., LL.M.
H.E. Prof. Dr. Eddy Pratomo, S.H., M.A., former Indonesian Ambassador to Germany, started the session with a presentation on climate change and its relevance to UNCLOS 1982 in achieving the SDGs. He emphasized that climate change refers to long-term changes in temperature and weather patterns. “Climate change may pose a threat to Indonesia’s status as an “archipelagic state” which is a new legal concept adopted in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 1982,” Prof. Eddy said.
The Lex Proficia 2024 summer course featured speakers H.E. Prof. Dr. Todung Mulya Lubis and Dr. Ciara Malone who discussed human rights, climate justice, and the role of international law in addressing these issues. The participants, comprised of students and academics from various countries, actively engaged in an interactive dialogue during the event. These discussions provided valuable insights into collaborative efforts among different countries and communities to tackle global challenges. The session ended on an optimistic note, with both speakers encouraging ongoing learning and collaborative action for a better future. The success of this first session sets a positive precedent for the Faculty of Law UNDIP Lex Proficia 2024 summer course series, which aims to increase awareness and knowledge of important world issues.
